If there is anything fascinating about Pat Metheny, it is his extraordinary ability to constantly evolve, whatever the context. It has been more than forty-five years since his phonographic odyssey began, in trio, in 1975, with drummer Bob Moses and the brilliant Jaco Pastorius on electric bass. Since then, this virtuoso and innovator has influenced countless musicians – not just guitarists…– and worked with the greatest (from Ornette Coleman to David Bowie to Michael Brecker, John Zorn, Abbey Lincoln, Meshell Ndegeocello and Steve Reich) has never been repeated, guided by his insatiable curiosity and natural respect for all (good) music.
Side-Eye NYC, his latest album, does not sound like the work of a semi-retired jazz "senator", but like the live recording of a trio whose freshness of inspiration leaves breathless admiration. Pat Metheny connects his glorious past and bright future by reinventing the sublime composition that gave his name to his first album, Bright Size Life. A guitar, keyboards, drums: here is a trio that sounds like a great futuristic orchestra, led by one of the greatest jazzmen of history, decidedly always at the forefront of modernity.
