Twenty years ago, on july 20th 2000, the brand new congress & cultural center of the Principality of Monaco was inaugurated by HSH Prince Rainier III, accompanied by HSH Prince Albert and HSH Princess Stéphanie.
HSH Prince Rainier III introduced then his speech saying « Once more the Principality achieves a project that arises astonishement but also asks a number of questions…» …… « I must underline the Grimaldi Forum Monaco will bring a new dimension into our congress and cultural events’policy. »
For Sylvie Biancheri, General Director of the Grimaldi Forum Monaco, « It was very clear at that time that this project appeared to be very ambitious and some people feared we could not fill all these news spaces ».
20 years later, the Grimaldi Forum Monaco is internationally well positionned in the congress and cultural events sectors, with a unique know-how that allies the expertise of its teams (145 people -of which 54% employed for more than 10 years-), permanent innovation, in many fields but priorily in environmental commitment in the context of its 14001 ISO Certification since 2008.
After having achieved a record-year in 2019, with a a turnover of 24 million euros, 290 000 visitors and nearly 120 events, and experienced constant growth over the past five years and some indirect impact on the Principality esteemed around 68 € Millions, the congress and cultural center of the Principality remains optimistic in spite of the current crisis, keeping the focus on its numerous projects : the most important, planned for the end of 2024, is without any doubt the extension of its building in the Marretera eco-district project, that will allow 6.000 sq meters more of exhibition spaces and the opportunity to organize bigger events or several events simultaneously. Another promising project, a new terrace of 600 sq meters located on the building’s seaward side and opening onto the promenade that runs along it, will be the ideal location to host lounge and networking spaces, or to organize finger buffets and outdoor cocktails for up to 800 standing attendees.
In terms of innovation and new measures, all the sanitary arrangements have already been made and the Grimaldi Forum will innovate from the start of the new school year with a new hybrid event concept to overcome the impossibility of face-to-face meetings and also to optimise exposure to an event.
In terms of culture, even though the Monaco and the Automobile exhibition has been cancelled, its catalogue has nonetheless been published and is already available to buy (for more details click here). The GFM is looking to the future, with two major summer exhibitions already confirmed: the first one in 2021 dedicated to Alberto Giacometti, with the largest loan ever granted to the eponymous foundation, and the second in 2023 dedicated to the master of impressionist masters: Claude Monet.
After having organised a gratitude ceremony for its teams on july 9th, in the presence of HSH Prince Albert II and the Minister of Interior Patrice Cellario, the GFM goes on celebrating its 20th birthday .
Starting at the end of this week, a cultural retrospective devoted to the twenty most important major summer exhibitions and its musical program over the past twenty years will be published on the website and social medias of the Grimaldi Forum Monaco ! And from the start of the new school year, 20 years of MICE events will then be celebrated !
